Many of the substances found in cosmetic and personal care products can cause intolerances or allergies. The most common allergens in cosmetics are fragrances, colourants and preservatives.
Symptoms such as skin reddening, swelling or itching result. They usually occur just hours or even several days later.
The epicutaneous test is highly accurate. A patch is affixed to the skin containing certain substances on the adhesive side (e.g. a mixture of the fragrances). After two and/or three days, it is possible to read off exactly to which substances you react allergically.
